BJP Names Ganesh Khankar as BMC Group Leader Following Decisive Civic Poll Victory

Mumbai: Over two weeks after the 2026 BMC elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its group leader for the civic body. Ganesh Khankar has been designated as the new BJP group leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a move that follows the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s success in securing a majority in the municipal corporation. The BJP stood out as the single largest party in the recently held polls, capturing 89 seats independently.

Khankar won from Ward No. 7 in Dahisar, overcoming Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Saurabh Ghosalkar, son of prominent UBT leader Vinod Ghosalkar. As the BJP has emerged as the single-largest party in the BMC, Khankar is set to assume the role of Leader of the House. The party is expected to officially register its group, comprising all 89 elected councillors, at the Konkan Divisional Commissioner’s office located at Konkan Bhavan in CBD Belapur on Monday.

The alliance between the BJP and Shinde Sena has collectively won 118 seats, positioning them to command the majority in the Municipal Corporation. Yet, despite their commanding performance, neither the BJP nor the Shinde-led Shiv Sena has finalized the formal registration procedure, triggering widespread speculation about a potential power struggle for dominance over the nation’s wealthiest municipal body. Against this backdrop of uncertainty, the mayoral election has been postponed to the second week of February.
