Austrian Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer Tests Atal Setu Emergency System In Mumbai
Mumbai: During an official visit to Mumbai, Austria’s Federal Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism, Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, personally tested the emergency response system on the Atal Setu, India’s longest sea bridge, and expressed high appreciation for its efficiency. The minister made an unscheduled stop at one of the bridge’s Emergency Call Boxes, providing a real-time demonstration of the safety infrastructure in action.
The Emergency Call Boxes, installed at regular intervals along the bridge, are designed to connect users directly and instantly with a central command centre in case of any emergency or distress. When Minister Hattmannsdorfer activated the system, the response from the control centre was immediate, visibly impressing the entire Austrian delegation accompanying him.

In a follow-up interaction with Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Austrian minister described Atal Setu as “one of the most amazing bridges in the world” and particularly highlighted the effectiveness of its emergency systems. This praise is noteworthy considering Austria’s own strong reputation in advanced emergency communication technologies.
The visit was part of a broader engagement that also included Robert Zischg, Ambassador of Austria to India. The delegation’s interaction with MMRDA officials culminated in the signing of a Letter of Intent aimed at fostering long-term strategic cooperation between the two sides in areas such as infrastructure, technology, and safety systems.
A video shared by the MMRDA on social media captured the moment the minister tested the emergency call box, further highlighting the swift coordination and focus on commuter safety that defines the ambitious infrastructure project.
