Mumbai: Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, has announced a “Jail Bharo Andolan” in Mumbai on October 2. The protest is being planned to raise concerns about the Election Commission and issues related to the electoral process.
Dipke has appealed to political parties, supporters and members of the public to join the protest. The demonstration is planned for Gandhi Jayanti and was proposed to be held at Shivaji Park, one of Mumbai’s well known public spaces.
However, Mumbai Police have reportedly denied permission for the proposed gathering at Shivaji Park. Authorities cited existing restrictions on the use of the ground and expressed concerns about traffic, noise and possible inconvenience to people living in the surrounding areas. The presence of hospitals and other important establishments nearby was also cited as a concern.
Following the denial, Dipke criticised the decision and said that the protest was important for drawing public attention to concerns surrounding the electoral system. He has raised questions about the functioning of the Election Commission and has also spoken about the use of technology and artificial intelligence in elections.
The proposed agitation comes at a time when electoral issues are receiving considerable political attention. The revision of electoral rolls, in particular, has become a subject of debate, with political groups raising questions about the process and demanding greater transparency.
Dipke has said that the “Jail Bharo Andolan” is intended to give people an opportunity to peacefully express their concerns. The protest is expected to focus on election related issues rather than being limited to a single political party.
Meanwhile, Mumbai is also expected to see another major political demonstration on October 4. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray have announced a joint march concerning the Election Commission and electoral issues.
With two separate demonstrations planned within a few days, Mumbai police and local authorities are likely to closely monitor the situation and make arrangements to manage traffic and public movement.
The final arrangements for Dipke’s October 2 protest will depend on discussions between the organisers and authorities. Whether the demonstration takes place at Shivaji Park or another location will also depend on the permissions granted by the administration.
The proposed protest adds to the growing public and political debate over the electoral process, with different groups continuing to demand answers and greater transparency from the authorities.
