Listening to music while working is a common practice for many, but its impact on productivity and health is a mixed bag. A workplace psychologist, told that music’s effect depends on the task and individual preferences. “For repetitive or monotonous tasks, background music can improve mood and sustain focus,” she said. However, complex tasks requiring deep thought, such as problem-solving or creative writing, may suffer if music especially with lyrics is involved.

The health risks of prolonged earbud use are another concern. Audiologists warn that listening to music through earbuds for extended periods can harm hearing. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends keeping volume below 60% of the device’s maximum and limiting earbud use to one hour daily to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Excessive exposure to loud sounds can damage the inner ear’s delicate structures, leading to irreversible hearing issues over time.

That poorly maintained earbuds can cause ear infections due to bacteria buildup. Regular cleaning and proper fit are essential to minimize health risks. Experts advise taking breaks and using noise-canceling earbuds to enjoy music at safer volume levels.
