FSSAI Makes ‘V’ Logo Mandatory For Vegan Food Products From July 2027

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced that all approved vegan food products will be required to carry a standardised vegan logo on their packaging from July 1, 2027. The move comes under the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026.

The decision is aimed at improving transparency in food labelling and helping consumers easily identify vegan products available in the market.

Standard Vegan Symbol Introduced

Under the amended rules, every approved vegan food package must display an official green “VEGAN” logo featuring a stylised “V” along with a leaf symbol. The notification also outlines specifications related to the logo’s size, colour, and placement on packaging to ensure uniformity across brands.

The amendment was officially notified in the Gazette of India after FSSAI reviewed objections and suggestions received following the draft notification released in December 2022.

What Qualifies as Vegan Food

According to FSSAI regulations, vegan food products must not contain any ingredients, additives, or processing aids derived from animals. The guidelines also state that such products should not involve animal testing unless it is specifically required by a regulatory authority.

The regulations are intended to prevent misleading claims while strengthening consumer confidence in the growing plant-based food segment.

Aim Behind the New Regulation

The new logo system is expected to make it easier for consumers to identify genuine vegan products without having to carefully examine ingredient lists on packaging.

Officials stated that the move will create a clear national identity for vegan foods while ensuring standard compliance among manufacturers and food businesses.

Regulation to Come Into Effect in 2027

Although the amendment regulations have already been notified, mandatory implementation will begin from July 1, 2027, giving food businesses sufficient time to update packaging and comply with the revised norms.

The development was earlier reported by Free Press Journal and several other media organisations, while ANI also carried details of the notification issued by FSSAI.

The report is based on recent updates regarding FSSAI’s vegan food labelling regulations.
