As temperatures rise, traditional Indian beverages are gaining renewed attention for their natural cooling properties. According to a report by NDTV Food, one such refreshing drink from Odisha, known as Bela Pana, stands out as an ideal summer cooler rooted in cultural significance.
Bela Pana is closely associated with Pana Sankranti, also referred to as Maha Bishuba Sankranti, which marks the Odia New Year and is celebrated annually on April 14. As highlighted by NDTV Food, the festival itself derives its name from this traditional drink, which is not only consumed widely but also offered to deities as part of rituals.
The beverage is prepared using wood apple (bael) pulp combined with yoghurt, milk, grated coconut, and jaggery, creating a rich and flavourful blend. Additional ingredients such as mashed bananas and aromatic spices like cardamom and black pepper are often included to enhance both taste and nutritional value.
Beyond its cultural relevance, Bela Pana is valued for its health benefits. NDTV Food notes that bael fruit is known for its cooling effect on the body and its ability to support digestion. The drink helps regulate body temperature and may aid in preventing dehydration and heat-related discomfort during extreme summer conditions.
The preparation process involves extracting the pulp from the hard shell of the wood apple, mixing it with water, and straining it to achieve a smooth consistency. Sweeteners like jaggery are then added, followed by other ingredients to create a thick, refreshing beverage that is best served chilled.
As reported by NDTV Food, Bela Pana represents a blend of tradition, nutrition, and seasonal relevance, making it a popular choice for those looking to stay cool and energised during the summer months.
