Zelenskyy To Head To US After Trump-Putin Summit, Zelenskyy Backs Trump’s Proposal For Trilateral Meeting

New Delhi : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that he was ready for “constructive cooperation” in ending the war with Russia after Donald Trump told him that Putin preferred a “comprehensive peace deal” to a ceasefire. Zelenskyy said he would travel to Washington on Monday at the invitation of Donald Trump.

The call with the Ukrainian leader lasted for more than an hour. According to Axios, Trump is believed to have told Zelenskyy to negotiate a “fast peace deal” rather than a ceasefire. Zelenskyy said he had a “long and substantive” conversation with President Trump. He also backed Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, Russia and the United States.

Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” he further said. The embattled Ukrainian leader also stressed the importance of European leaders being present “at every stage” to ensure reliable security guarantees together with the US.

Later, Zelenskyy held another round of talks with European Nato leaders, minus Trump. Trump entered office promising to end the Ukraine war in 24 hours. However, more than seven months into his presidency, that goal remains in limbo as Putin has refused to give in. Putin was not only given a red-carpet welcome, he even rode with Trump in the presidential limousine, also known as ‘The Beast’.
