Americans dominated the list of most-searched global leaders and political figures in Google’s “Year in Search 2025”, with US President Donald Trump unsurprisingly leading the rankings.

Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV, elected in May 2025 as the first American-born pope, drew huge worldwide attention and quickly became one of the year’s most-searched public figures. Although a religious leader, his selection as the first American-born head of the Catholic Church had major political and social resonance, fuelling intense global interest and search traffic.

Sanae Takaichi

Sanae Takaichi attracted sustained search interest after she became Japan’s first woman Prime Minister in 2025. Her comments on Taiwan, suggesting Japan would likely be drawn into any conflict if China invaded the self-ruled island, sparked controversy and headlines. Takaichi, who took over as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in 2025, has remained a highly searched political leader.

Kamala Harris

Former US Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost the 2024 presidential election to Trump, continued to feature among the most-searched political figures in 2025. Zohran Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani emerged as a major search term in 2025 after he was elected mayor of New York City following a closely watched race in which Trump also made disparaging remarks about him.
