“Will Trump Kidnap Our PM Like Venezuela?” : Congress Leader Prithviraj Chavan

New Delhi : Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan sparked a political row after questioning whether former US President Donald Trump could “kidnap” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he did Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Chavan made the remarks while commenting on former US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on India. He said Trump had used tariffs to disrupt trade with India, adding that even if Trump were to impose an additional 50% tariff, it would make no difference.

The question is: will India witness what happened in Venezuela? Will Trump kidnap our Prime Minister?,” Chavan said. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari shared a clip from the interview on X and slammed him for the comparison. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari shared a clip from the interview on X and slammed him for the comparison. Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan shamelessly comparing India’s situation with Venezuela. By asking whether ‘what happened in Venezuela can happen in India’, Congress is making its anti-India mindset clear,” the BJP national spokesperson said in a post on X.

He attacked the Centre over its alleged silence on the crisis, saying the developments in Venezuela were “against the United Nations Charter”. He further warned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent globally.Whatever has happened in Venezuela is against the UN Charter. An elected president has been kidnapped. It’s a very grave concern that it could happen to any other country tomorrow. Tomorrow it can happen to India.”

India has not spoken as usual, not taken a stand on the Venezuela matter. Russia and China have taken a stand and criticised what America has done,” he said, drawing parallels with earlier conflicts. The same thing happened in the Ukraine war. We did not take any side. We did not take any stand on the Israel-Hamas matter, and now here we are, so scared of Americans that we are not even trying to criticise what has happened,” he added.

This whole investigation is based on Venezuela because Venezuela has the largest oil store in the world, and America has an eye on them, on how oil is used as a weapon, he said. Chavan said sections of the international community had criticised the US action, but India had chosen not to speak up. “The international community has criticised this, and India is silent like always,” he said.

He extended the argument to India’s global ambitions, questioning whether New Delhi could aspire to a leadership role without taking clear positions. “If we say that India is our third largest economy, then you will have to take a stand. If you want to become a permanent member of the Security Council, then you will have to play a role. This is not going to work,” Chavan said.
