Shooting at Virginia State University: 5 Injured, Lockdown Lifted After Hours-Long Scare

Five people were shot early Saturday morning at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, according to the university and VSU Police. The campus was placed under lockdown for several hours following the incident, which has since been lifted, though a significant police presence remains on campus.
“A shooting occurred in the area of the Quad Annexes involving multiple victims, who were transported to area hospitals,” VSU Police said in a statement posted to X. “Police are on scene and request that you avoid the area. Campus remains on lockdown. Updates to follow,” the statement added at the time.
What Happened
Officers responded around 1:28 a.m. to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street and found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls. All five were taken to hospital. One victim remains in critical condition, while the other four sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.
The university said the shooting involved “multiple suspects” near the Quad Annexes, in the area of Boisseau Street and Third Avenue.
Lockdown Lifted, Investigation Ongoing
The campus lockdown, which had been in effect for hours, was lifted at 8:22 a.m., the university confirmed. However, a significant law enforcement presence remains on campus as the investigation continues.
The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from VSU Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. No arrests have been announced, and no suspects have been identified so far.
