New York : US Vice President JD Vance’s remark about his Hindu wife’s faith was not the only controversy of the Turning Point USA campus event earlier this week. What also turned heads is the intimate hug between Vance and Erika Kirk, the widow of Trump aide Charlie Kirk, and her glowing words about seeing Charlie in JD.
The incident happened as Erika made her first major public appearance since Charlie’s assassination in September. The right-wing activist and a close aide of Donald Trump was shot dead while speaking at a university event in Utah. When our team asked my dear friend, JD Vance, to speak today, I really prayed on it, because obviously it’s a very emotional, emotional day, she said.
Pictures and videos of their embrace soon found their way on social media, triggering speculation that all was not well in the Vance household. Vance announces divorce, marries Charlie Kirk’s widow by the end of 2026, Watts tweeted in response to a post that carried photos of the duo. Her post has received over 9 million views at the time of writing.
Vance’s marriage to Usha, who comes from a Hindu family of Telugu immigrants, has long made him a target for far-right figures. It escalated after he won the vice presidential contest. Vance is expected to make a bid for the 2028 presidential election as the MAGA candidate, with Trump serving his last term.
On top of it, Vance’s remark at the event, where he candidly expressed his hope that Usha would one day embrace Christianity, has only set tongues wagging. Most Sundays, Usha will come with me to the church… Do I hope, eventually, that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved by in church? Honestly, I do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way,” Vance said, inviting massive backlash.
