US President Trump Demands Iphones Sold In US To Be Made Domestically, Threatens 25% Tariff On Apple If They Are Made Outside

New York : US President Donald Trump on Friday said that if iPhones sold in the United States aren’t made within the country, the tech giant will have to pay a 25% tariff. Trump wrote, “I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else.
If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the US. Thank your for your attention to this matter!” This has caused Apple shares to fall by 2.5% in premarket trading, and US stock futures also slipped. However, it’s still unclear whether Trump actually has the legal power to impose a tariff on one specific company.
Apple is shifting more production to India as an alternative to China, following Trump’s tariffs that have stirred supply chain worries and price fears. Most US-bound iPhones will come from India this June, reported Reuters. Trump’s warning comes as part of his broader stance on bringing more manufacturing jobs back to the US.
