US and Denmark Set for High-Level Talks on Greenland Amid Rising Tensions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans to hold discussions with Danish officials next week regarding Greenland, as strains intensify over President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for the United States to assume control of the strategically vital Arctic territory.
The upcoming meeting follows a direct request from the governments of Denmark and Greenland for urgent talks with Rubio. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen explained that the dialogue aims to address perceived misunderstandings in the US position.
“We believe it makes sense to try to arrange a meeting with our American counterparts in order to clear up some of the misunderstandings that may exist,” Rasmussen told reporters, noting that some aspects of the ongoing debate appear to stem from a “misreading” of the facts.
Greenland’s foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, stated on Facebook that the objective is to engage on the “United States’ strong statements regarding Greenland.”

The development comes shortly after Trump reiterated that “US military is always an option” for securing the island. On the same day, European leaders issued a joint statement urging respect for the territorial integrity of both Denmark and Greenland.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had previously cautioned that any US military action against Greenland would effectively dismantle NATO and undermine the post-World War II security framework.
The talks are seen as an effort to shift the conversation toward dialogue amid heightened concerns within the alliance.
