Washington: The United States has intensified its criticism of China, accusing Beijing of playing a significant role in supporting Iran, which Washington continues to label as the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. According to a report by Firstpost, US officials claim that China’s economic engagement with Tehran, particularly through oil purchases and financial channels, has helped Iran sustain activities linked to militant groups.
American authorities argue that despite ongoing sanctions, Iran has been able to maintain a steady flow of revenue, largely due to Chinese demand for its oil. Reports cited by Firstpost suggest that a substantial portion of Iran’s crude exports is being absorbed by China, allowing Tehran to bypass restrictions imposed by the West.
The US administration has also pointed to what it describes as a “shadow banking network” that facilitates financial transactions between China and Iran. This system allegedly enables Tehran to access funds that could be directed toward its regional allies and proxy groups. Washington has responded by expanding sanctions targeting entities and individuals involved in these networks, aiming to curb Iran’s financial capabilities.
Beijing, however, has rejected these allegations, maintaining that its trade relations with Iran are legitimate and in line with international norms. Chinese officials have criticised the US approach, arguing that unilateral sanctions undermine global economic stability and fairness.
The growing friction between the US and China over Iran reflects broader geopolitical tensions, particularly as both powers seek to assert influence in the Middle East. Analysts cited in the Firstpost report note that the dispute underscores a widening divide in how global powers approach issues of security, trade, and regional stability.
