Trump Threatens Canada With 100% Tariffs Over China Trade Deal; Warns PM Mark Carney Against ‘Drop Off Port’ Strategy

Washington/ New Delhi: Escalating trade tensions with his northern neighbor, US President Donald Trump issued a severe warning to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday, threatening to impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it proceeds with a trade agreement with China. Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump argued that deepening ties with Beijing would endanger Canada’s economy and social structure.

“China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” Trump wrote. He explicitly stated the consequences of such a partnership, adding, “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”

Concerns Over Tariff Evasion

The US President suggested that Beijing intends to utilize Canada as a backdoor to bypass American trade barriers. “If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump asserted in his post.

Rising Diplomatic Tensions

The threat follows a series of diplomatic frictions between Washington and Ottawa. Last week, Prime Minister Carney announced on X (formerly Twitter) that his administration had secured a new trade agreement with China, stating the deal would “unlocking more than $7 billion in export markets for Canadian workers and businesses.”

During a recent visit to China, Carney described the Asian superpower as a “reliable and predictable partner.” Furthermore, while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, he encouraged European leaders to seek investment from the world’s second-largest economy.

The rift widened on Thursday when Trump withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his “Board of Peace” initiative—a program aimed at resolving global conflicts. This move came after Carney used his speech at Davos to openly decry powerful nations that use economic integration as weapons and leverage tariffs for political gain.
