Washington: US President Donald Trump officially unveiled a newly modified Boeing 747 that will serve as a temporary Air Force One, marking a significant change in the presidential fleet. The aircraft, originally gifted by Qatar, was introduced during a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and is expected to remain in service until the long-delayed next-generation Air Force One planes are delivered.
Luxury Aircraft Meant to Bridge the Gap
The aircraft, designated as a VC-25B, was previously owned by Qatar and has undergone extensive modifications to meet presidential transportation requirements. According to reports by Reuters and The Guardian, the jet has received upgrades involving communications, security systems and defensive capabilities before joining the Air Force One fleet. The aircraft is intended to fill the gap until Boeing completes delivery of two new presidential aircraft, now expected in 2027 and 2028.

Trump described the aircraft as a necessary modernization step, arguing that the United States should possess a presidential aircraft comparable to those used by other world leaders.
Controversy Over Qatar’s Gift
The aircraft has generated political and ethical debate because it originated as a gift from the Qatari government. Reports indicate that the Boeing 747 was valued at approximately $400 million before undergoing refurbishment. Critics have questioned the acceptance of such a costly foreign gift and raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest and compliance with federal ethics standards.
Questions have also been raised about the overall cost of converting the aircraft for presidential use. Estimates cited in media reports suggest that retrofitting and security upgrades could exceed $1 billion.
New Design Replaces Traditional Look
One of the most noticeable changes is the aircraft’s exterior appearance. The jet features a red, white, dark blue and gold colour scheme, replacing the traditional light-blue Air Force One design that has been associated with US presidents since the era of President John F. Kennedy.
The aircraft’s interior has also drawn attention for its luxury fittings, premium materials and high-end design elements. Trump publicly thanked Qatar’s Emir for the aircraft and praised its craftsmanship during the unveiling ceremony.
Security Concerns Continue
Despite assurances from officials that the aircraft meets required standards, some lawmakers and security experts remain concerned about using a foreign-origin aircraft as a presidential transport platform. Concerns include surveillance risks, the complexity of integrating secure systems and the speed at which modifications were completed.
Officials, however, have maintained that the aircraft has undergone the necessary work to satisfy operational and security requirements before entering service.
Aircraft Set for Public Debut
The refurbished jet is expected to make its first major public appearance during Independence Day celebrations, where it will participate in a large flyover. It will operate alongside the existing presidential aircraft until older models are gradually retired from service.
The unveiling highlights the ongoing effort to modernize the presidential fleet while continuing to fuel debate in Washington over the aircraft’s origins, costs and long-term implications.
