Tensions between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have escalated following remarks made by Trump during an interview with an Italian broadcaster. Trump asserted that Meloni had eagerly sought a photograph with him at the recent G7 summit in France, claiming she “wanted a picture with me so badly” that he agreed only out of pity.
According to the interview, Trump portrayed the encounter as a gesture of goodwill on his part. He stated that Meloni had “begged” him for the photo and added that she was likely pleased he had spoken with her, noting that he was under no obligation to do so. Video from the summit depicted the two leaders in a prolonged discussion, yet Trump framed the interaction as one where he extended a favor.
Meloni responded firmly on Friday, dismissing the claims as entirely fabricated and expressing surprise at the president’s comments toward a key ally. She highlighted her astonishment at such behavior, suggesting it reflected a pattern in his dealings with partners. In a pointed retort, Meloni emphasized national dignity, declaring that neither she nor Italy had any need to plead for anything. She further expressed disappointment that Trump did not direct comparable resolve toward adversaries of the West and the United States, instead showing greater leniency toward their leaders.

The exchange has had broader diplomatic repercussions. Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of a planned visit to the United States scheduled for June 21 and 22. Tajani described Trump’s words as gravely offensive and an affront to the entire nation.
This public disagreement represents a notable deterioration in the relationship between the two figures, who were previously regarded as ideological allies. Meloni had been one of Trump’s most vocal supporters in Europe. She was the sole European leader present at his 2025 inauguration and was long considered a close international partner.
However, bilateral ties have faced growing strain in recent months. Differences emerged notably after Meloni distanced herself from Trump following his criticism of Pope Leo amid the pontiff’s stance on the Iran conflict. Trump, in turn, accused her of insufficient resolve, underscoring an expanding divide even as both sides had appeared to seek reconciliation in the lead-up to the G7 gathering.
The episode underscores the volatility in transatlantic relations, coming shortly after the summit where interactions between the leaders had suggested a potential easing of prior frictions. As the situation develops, it highlights the challenges in maintaining alliances amid personal and political differences.
