Cambodia and Thailand Reach Ceasefire Accord After Prolonged Border Negotiations

Phnom Penh – Cambodia has formalized a ceasefire agreement with neighboring Thailand, according to the Cambodian Defence Ministry.

The pact comes at the conclusion of three days of intensive discussions between the two Southeast Asian nations, which have been engaged in intense border clashes lasting several weeks.

The talks, facilitated through established bilateral mechanisms, aimed to halt the recent escalation of hostilities that stemmed from longstanding territorial disputes. Both sides have traded accusations of violations during previous truce attempts, but the latest agreement marks a significant step toward de-escalation.

Details of the agreement, including specific terms on troop withdrawals, demining efforts, and verification measures, were not immediately disclosed by the ministry. However, it builds on prior regional mediation efforts to restore stability along the contested frontier.

The development follows renewed fighting that reignited despite earlier accords brokered internationally. Officials from both countries expressed commitment to implementing the ceasefire to prevent further casualties and allow for peaceful resolution of underlying border issues.

Reuters reported on the announcement, highlighting the urgency of the negotiations amid ongoing regional concerns over the conflict’s impact on civilians and stability in Southeast Asia.

This agreement offers hope for a lasting pause in the violence that has displaced thousands and strained relations between the two nations for months.
