The explosion, which happened at the Le Constellation Bar and Lounge in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana, left several injured, as per local reports. While authorities are yet to reveal the exact cause of the incident, the incident comes as Switzerland has been grappling with forest fires amid an unusual period of drought.

Videos circulating on social media show huge plumes of smoke billowing out from the bar following the incident. “There has been an explosion of unknown origin. There are several injured, and several dead,” Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesman, told AFP. Police said a helpline for families of those affected has been set up. The ski resort is approximately two hours from the Swiss capital of Bern.

The incident comes months after a fire broke out at Switzerland’s oldest luxury hotel in the heart of Geneva. The blaze at the famous Four Seasons Hotel Des Bergues, which opened in 1834 and is considered an important landmark, left several injured.Images published by Swiss media showed a building in flames, and emergency services nearby.

A reception centre and helpline have been setup for impacted families, Lathion said.
