Sergio Gor Assumes Role as U.S. Ambassador to India, Says India Will Be Invited to Join Pax Silica

U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor took charge in Delhi on Monday (January 12, 2026). In a public address before formally assuming office, Mr. Gor thanked U.S. President Donald Trump and said his mission in India is to strengthen ties between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.

He added that Mr. Trump had conveyed his best wishes to “his friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr. Gor said India and the U.S. are actively discussing a trade deal, with the first call between negotiators scheduled for Tuesday (January 13, 2026). He also announced that India will be invited to join Pax Silica as a full member, describing it as a new U.S.-led strategic initiative focused on securing global silicon and high-technology supply chains.

His remarks, delivered before hundreds of U.S. Embassy staff in Delhi and members of the Indian media, were notable because he has not yet presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu. Diplomatic protocol requires Ambassadors to make public appearances only after credentials are submitted. According to sources, President Murmu is expected to accept the credentials later this week.

‘Real friends disagree but resolve differences’

Mr. Gor said the “friendship” between Mr. Trump and Mr. Modi is “real” and that the U.S. and India “are bound not just by shared interests, but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences in the end.”

“And while trade is very important for our relationship, we will continue to work closely together on other very important areas, such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health,” Mr. Gor added.
