Viral Visa Fraud Claim Against Sadhana Gollapudi Falls Apart After US Official Confirms Her Citizenship

Houston: A social media post accusing Indian origin biomedical engineer and Kuchipudi dancer Sadhana Gollapudi of misusing the US student visa system has taken a dramatic turn after a senior US official confirmed that she is a naturalized US citizen.
The controversy began after an X account circulated a video of Gollapudi performing Kuchipudi in Houston. Along with the video came allegations that she had been in the United States on an F-1 student visa since 2014, had repeatedly enrolled in academic programmes and was working in ways allegedly prohibited under her visa status.
The claims quickly spread online.
But there was a major problem with the central allegation.Gollapudi is not currently in the US on an F-1 student visa. She is a naturalized American citizen.Aaron Reitz, the US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, confirmed the information after saying his office looked into the matter.“Thanks for flagging. My office looked. She’s a naturalized US citizen, not here on student visa,” Reitz said in a post on X.That clarification directly contradicts the main premise of the viral post.
How the allegation started
The controversy appears to have originated with an X account identified in reports as CyberGreen09, which posted Gollapudi’s dance video along with claims about her immigration history.
The post portrayed her as someone who had remained an F-1 student for years while allegedly working outside the conditions of her visa. It also made claims about her involvement in multiple educational programmes and alleged employment as a dancer and tutor. The post attracted attention because it combined a personal video with a serious immigration accusation. However, the allegations were circulated on social media rather than presented as the result of an official immigration investigation.
That distinction became important after Reitz’s office checked Gollapudi’s status.
US official confirms she is a citizen
Reitz’s response changed the direction of the story.According to his statement, Gollapudi is a naturalized US citizen. In other words, she is not currently living in the United States under F-1 student status. An F-1 visa is used by eligible international students studying in the US. It comes with specific rules governing employment and other activities.
A naturalized US citizen, however, does not depend on an F-1 visa to live or work in the country. That makes the viral claim that Gollapudi was currently abusing an F-1 student visa fundamentally misleading.
Reitz also used his response to stress that his office takes immigration and visa fraud seriously. But his statement about Gollapudi herself was clear she is a naturalized citizen, not an F-1 student.
Who is Sadhana Gollapudi?
Gollapudi has been described in reports as an Indian origin biomedical engineer based in Houston. She is also a practitioner of Kuchipudi, the classical Indian dance form.
It was a video of one of her performances that brought her into the centre of the online controversy. The video itself showed a cultural performance. The immigration allegations were added by the account that shared it.
Gollapudi later pushed back against the claims and said the posts about her were false and misleading. She also urged people to report the content and objected to the use of her material without permission.
The controversy goes beyond one viral post
The episode has since raised questions about how quickly unverified claims can spread on social media, particularly when they involve immigration.
An accusation involving someone’s visa status can have serious consequences. Once a post is widely shared, correcting the original claim can be much harder than spreading it in the first place.
In Gollapudi’s case, the original allegation gained traction before an official clarification established that she was a US citizen. The incident also drew attention from Indian American voices who criticised the way Gollapudi had been publicly portrayed.
Indian American Impact Action Fund, among others, criticised the targeting of Gollapudi and highlighted concerns about misinformation involving Indian Americans and naturalised US citizens.
What is actually established?
At this stage, the important distinction is between what was alleged online and what has been officially verified. The social media post alleged that Gollapudi was an F-1 student involved in visa violations.
The US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas subsequently said his office had checked and confirmed that she is a naturalized US citizen.
There is therefore no basis in the available reporting to describe Gollapudi as someone currently committing F-1 visa fraud. The story is instead a reminder of how quickly an unverified social media accusation can turn into a much larger controversy.
