Moscow: Russia has reportedly provided Iran with intelligence that could help identify and target American military assets in the Middle East, according to officials familiar with US intelligence. The development is being viewed as a possible early indication that Moscow may be moving closer to involvement in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.
The Associated Press, citing two US officials who spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to discuss sensitive intelligence matters publicly, reported that the information shared by Russia could assist Iran in locating American warships, aircraft and other military resources in the region.
However, US intelligence agencies have not found evidence suggesting that Russia is instructing Tehran on how to use the data it allegedly supplied. Officials indicated that while the intelligence sharing could enhance Iran’s ability to track US military positions, there is currently no indication that Moscow is directly guiding Iranian operations.
The report comes as hostilities between Iran and the US-Israel alliance continue to escalate following a series of airstrikes launched against Iranian targets. In response, Iran has carried out retaliatory attacks, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
Analysts note that the conflict has already significantly affected Iran’s military capabilities, particularly its ability to independently monitor US forces in the region. In this context, intelligence support from Russia could potentially help Tehran compensate for those limitations.
Despite the reports, the precise scope of Russia’s assistance remains unclear. Moscow has not publicly confirmed providing intelligence to Iran, and US officials continue to assess the extent of the alleged cooperation.
The claims nevertheless highlight the increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the conflict, with global powers closely watching how alliances and strategic partnerships may influence the course of the fighting in the Middle East.
