An explosion struck a critical natural gas facility in Qatar on Sunday night, injuring at least 54 workers and leaving 18 others unaccounted for as rescue operations continued.
The incident occurred at the Barzan gas supply plant within the Ras Laffan industrial zone, a major hub for the country’s energy exports. Authorities reported that the blast and subsequent fire broke out while crews were working to resume operations at the terminal. Production had been suspended earlier following damage from a prior strike in the region.
Officials from the state energy company confirmed the explosion at the facility. Initial assessments suggested limited casualties, but updated figures from the interior ministry later revealed the higher toll. The full extent of damage to the infrastructure remains unclear in the immediate aftermath.
The Barzan plant plays a vital role in Qatar’s domestic energy needs, with a daily capacity of nearly 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas. This output primarily supports local power generation and seawater desalination plants essential for the arid nation. Qatar holds the majority ownership of the facility, with a minority stake held by an international energy partner.
The timing of the blast adds complexity to regional energy dynamics. Qatar, a leading global producer of natural gas, had paused exports due to disruptions in key shipping routes linked to ongoing tensions. Recent developments in negotiations appeared to open the possibility of restarting flows, prompting the restart activities that preceded the explosion.

This marks the second major incident at the Ras Laffan site in recent months. In March, a missile strike caused significant damage and a fire that was eventually brought under control, further delaying operations.
Qatar’s vast natural gas reserves, shared with a neighboring country in the Persian Gulf, have fueled its economic growth and international influence. The resource wealth has supported major global initiatives, including sports hosting and diplomatic efforts.
As investigations proceed, the incident underscores the vulnerabilities in energy infrastructure during periods of heightened regional activity. Energy markets may face additional pressures given Qatar’s prominent position in global natural gas supply.
