Washington, DC: In a bold step toward resolving the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict, US President Donald Trump announced plans for a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary. The proposed summit aims to halt what Trump termed the “inglorious” war, coming on the heels of what he called a “very productive” telephone discussion between the two leaders.
Trump shared the details in a post on Truth Social, highlighting the positive tone of the exchange. He revealed that Putin extended congratulations to him and the United States for securing “peace in the Middle East,” an achievement Trump described as one “dreamed of for centuries.” Trump expressed optimism that this recent diplomatic success could pave the way for progress in negotiations over the Ukraine crisis. “I actually believe that the success in the Middle East will help in our negotiation in attaining an end to the war with Russia/Ukraine,” he stated.
The conversation also touched on broader bilateral issues. Trump noted Putin’s thanks to First Lady Melania Trump for her ongoing humanitarian efforts supporting children, which both sides agreed should persist. Additionally, the leaders delved into potential trade opportunities between Russia and the United States once hostilities cease, underscoring a desire to rebuild economic ties.

He further outlined that Rubio would hold discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following preparatory work.
