Putin Eyes ‘Trump Economy’ as US President Heads to Alaska for High-Stakes Talks

US President Donald Trump departed Washington on Friday aboard Air Force One for a high-level meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, with discussions expected to center on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, according to Reuters. Before takeoff, Trump said, “He (Putin) is interested in the Trump economy,” adding that he would consider business engagement with Russia “if we make progress,” but stressed, “They are not doing business until they get the war stopped.”

Expressing cautious optimism, Trump said, “Something is going to come of it.” On Ukraine’s territorial questions, he noted, “Ukraine has to decide territory.” Addressing continued attacks in the conflict, Trump remarked, “Putin thinks that gives him strength in talks, I think it hurts him,” and suggested, “I think they’re trying to negotiate.”

When pressed about possible outcomes, the President warned there “could be severe consequences.” He is traveling with a senior delegation that includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, among other top advisers. Shortly before leaving the White House, Trump posted “High stakes!!!” on his social media platform.
