Pro-Khalistan Advocate Jagmeet Singh Loses Seat as Canada’s NDP Falls Below Party Status Threshold

Ottawa: Canadian politician and prominent pro-Khalistan supporter Jagmeet Singh has announced his resignation as leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) following a major electoral defeat, CTV News reported. Singh, who represented Burnaby Central in British Columbia since 2019, lost his seat after coming in third in a restructured constituency. The NDP also failed to maintain its official party status in Parliament, falling short of the 12-seat minimum required.

In a post on X after his defeat, Singh said, “It’s been the honour of my life to lead the NDP and to represent the people of Burnaby Central. Congratulations to Prime Minister Carney and all the other leaders on a hard-fought campaign. While tonight’s results are disappointing for New Democrats, I am proud of our movement and remain hopeful for the future of our party. We will always choose hope over fear.” Singh has been known for his outspoken support of the Khalistan movement, often voicing concerns on behalf of its activists in Canada.

Meanwhile, Liberal leader Mark Carney is set to continue as Canada’s Prime Minister after his party secured enough seats in the country’s 45th federal election. Carney took over leadership from Justin Trudeau, who stepped down after internal party dissent towards the end of his tenure.

This election unfolded against the backdrop of tense Canada-U.S. relations, with former U.S. President Donald Trump imposing tariff threats and labeling Canada as the “51st state of the United States.”

According to an IPSOS poll commissioned by Global News, the Liberal Party maintained a narrow four-point lead before election day. Carney had called for an early election by dissolving Parliament to seek a fresh mandate shortly after assuming office.

Justin Trudeau’s strained ties with India, particularly after accusing New Delhi of involvement in the death of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, had marked his final years in office. In contrast, Carney has emphasized the importance of rebuilding relations with India, notably expressing condolences following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
