POK Protests Reach UK As 30 British MPs Raise Human Rights Concerns Over Crackdown

Jammu: Protests linked to the unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) reached the United Kingdom this week, with members of the Kashmiri diaspora demonstrating outside the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford following reports of civilian deaths during protests in Rawalakot.

According to India Today and news agency ANI, Pakistani security forces allegedly opened fire on demonstrators in Rawalakot, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 people and injuries to around 70 others. Protesters in the UK accused Pakistani authorities of using excessive force against civilians participating in demonstrations across POK.

Demonstrations Outside Pakistani Consulate in Bradford

The protest outside the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford was organised by members of the Kashmiri diaspora on June 9. Demonstrators condemned the reported crackdown by Pakistani authorities and demanded international attention to the developments in the region.

The protests in POK have intensified since June 5, particularly in Rawalakot, where demonstrators have been demanding economic relief and basic rights. According to ANI, activists associated with the movement alleged that security operations over the past two days had caused more than 100 deaths and several injuries.

JAAC Protest Movement Gains Momentum

The unrest reportedly escalated amid plans by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) to hold a major protest march seeking implementation of a 38-point charter. The demands include subsidised flour, affordable electricity, and the removal of 12 assembly seats reserved for Kashmiris.

India Today reported that the agitation in POK was triggered by public demands for economic support, affordable electricity, accountability, and other civic rights. Similar protests over shortages of food and electricity have taken place in the region in the past.

British MPs Raise Human Rights Concerns

The issue has also drawn attention in the UK Parliament. Around 30 British MPs, led by Bradford East MP Imran Hussain, reportedly wrote to the UK Foreign Office expressing concern over the situation in POK.

According to a PTI report cited by India Today, the MPs raised concerns about alleged communication blackouts, arrests, and growing tensions in the region. The lawmakers urged the British government to use diplomatic channels to encourage de-escalation and a peaceful resolution.

Imran Hussain, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Kashmir and has roots in POK, reportedly highlighted concerns about restrictions on communication and the broader lockdown-like situation in the area.

Concerns Over Arrests and Communication Restrictions

The British parliamentarians also expressed concern over reports that British nationals were among those detained. In their letter, the MPs warned that communication restrictions in a politically sensitive region could further increase tensions and reduce public confidence.

The lawmakers further claimed that dialogue between authorities and representatives of the JAAC had broken down amid ongoing governance and human rights concerns.

JAAC Ban Adds to Tensions

The tensions reportedly worsened after authorities in POK banned the JAAC on Friday, citing concerns related to public order and security. Following the ban, several individuals linked to the movement were reportedly detained.

The MPs called for restraint, peaceful dialogue, and constructive engagement with those raising grievances. They also sought clarification from the UK government regarding steps being taken to support British nationals and prevent further escalation in the region.
