Deadly Knife Rampage Claims Nine Lives, Including Children, Near Suriname’s Capital

Paramaribo — A devastating knife assault in a residential area outside Paramaribo, Suriname’s capital, resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals, among them several children, authorities reported on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
According to officials cited by the Associated Press, the victims comprised five minors and included the attacker’s own children as well as neighbors. Some reports specified that four of the slain children belonged to the suspect, while neighbors were killed after intervening to help.
Suriname’s Police Corps released a statement detailing that the male perpetrator resisted arrest upon officers’ arrival, attempting to assault them. He sustained injuries during the confrontation and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons responded to the tragedy on her Facebook page, stating that the attacker had taken the lives of his children and neighbors.
The incident marks a shocking outbreak of violence in the small South American nation, a former Dutch colony with a population of around 600,000. Suriname has historically maintained one of the region’s lowest homicide rates, though recent data from the think tank InSight Crime indicate a sharp rise in 2024, reaching approximately 30 homicides per 100,000 residents.
