Oil Prices Drop Nearly 3% Following Trump’s Statement On Iran Protest Violence

Oil prices tumbled by nearly three per cent late Wednesday (Jan 14) after US President Donald Trump stated that Iranian security forces had halted the killing of protesters. West Texas Intermediate fell 3.0 per cent to $60.16 per barrel, while Brent crude declined 2.93 per cent to $64.57.
TRUMP’S REMARKS AT THE WHITE HOUSE
During remarks at the White House earlier that day, Trump revealed he had obtained assurances from what he called “very important sources on the other side” indicating the violent suppression of demonstrations had ceased and that scheduled executions would not proceed. He provided no additional details and emphasized the information remained unverified independently.
“They’ve said the killing has stopped and the executions won’t take place,” Trump stated. “There were supposed to be a lot of executions today and that the executions won’t take place — and we’re going to find out.”
When questioned about whether US military action had been ruled out, Trump remained measured. “We’re going to watch it and see what the process is,” he said.
