5,000 ODI Matches Completed: Know The Unique Records Held By Sachin, Rohit, Virat And Others

Dundee (Scotland): The recent men’s ODI between Scotland (and Canada may not have been particularly significant for the major cricketing nations, but it was an important fixture for the category of smaller nations contributing to the growth of the game. The match was part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League. However, the bigger point is that this was the 5,000th ODI in the history of men’s One-Day International cricket. Very little has been said about this milestone over the past four days, so in this report, we take a closer look at the remarkable achievement and the records associated with it.
It all began on January 5, 1971, when Australia and England played the first-ever ODI in Melbourne. Australia, captained by Bill Lawry, defeated England, led by Ray Illingworth, by five wickets. Exactly 55 years and seven months after that historic first ODI, the 5,000th One-Day International was played on August 7, 2026.
South African fielding legend Jonty Rhodes expressed concern about the future of ODI cricket at an event in Mumbai on Tuesday. According to him, it is difficult even to imagine cricket without the One-Day format. Naturally, the ICC and BCCI are expected to make several efforts in the coming months to preserve the ODI format. Against this backdrop, let us finally take a look at some of the major records in the 5,000-match history of ODI cricket:
