Dundee (Scotland): The recent men’s ODI between Scotland (and Canada may not have been particularly significant for the major cricketing nations, but it was an important fixture for the category of smaller nations contributing to the growth of the game. The match was part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League. However, the bigger point is that this was the 5,000th ODI in the history of men’s One-Day International cricket. It all began on January 5, 1971, when Australia and England played the first-ever ODI in Melbourne. Australia, captained by Bill Lawry, defeated England, led by Ray Illingworth, by five wickets. South African fielding legend Jonty Rhodes expressed concern about the future of ODI cricket at an event in Mumbai on Tuesday.
