Norway Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s Son Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison In Rape Case

Oslo: Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of rape and several other offences by an Oslo court.

The verdict was delivered following a lengthy and closely watched trial that drew significant attention in Norway and internationally because of Hoiby’s links to the Norwegian royal family. According to Reuters, the 29-year-old was convicted on two counts of rape along with domestic violence-related offences.

Court Convicts Hoiby On Multiple Charges

Reports said Hoiby faced dozens of charges, including rape, assault, threats, drug-related offences and restraining order violations. Prosecutors had earlier sought a prison term of more than seven years.

According to Reuters, the Oslo District Court convicted him on two rape counts while acquitting him on two others. One of the incidents reportedly took place at the residence of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

The court also found Høiby guilty of assault and abuse in close relationships. He was additionally ordered to pay compensation to several women connected to the case.

Trial Drew Major Public Attention

The trial lasted several weeks and became one of the most high-profile legal proceedings involving a member connected to Norway’s royal family in recent years. Høiby, who does not hold a royal title and is not part of the line of succession, denied the most serious allegations during the proceedings but admitted to some lesser offences.

As reported by Reuters, the case included testimony related to domestic abuse, drug addiction and violations of restraining orders. The proceedings were closely followed by Norwegian media and sparked wider debate around the country’s monarchy.

Defence Can Appeal Verdict

According to reports, Hoiby attended parts of the proceedings through video link while remaining in custody. His legal team may appeal the verdict, while prosecutors also retain the right to challenge the sentence.

The Norwegian royal household has not issued detailed comments on the ruling. Reuters noted that the Royal House previously stated that Hoiby, despite his royal connections, is subject to the same laws and legal responsibilities as any other citizen.
