Venezuelan Opposition Veteran Slams Trump’s Post-Capture Vision as ‘Bizarre’

A prominent Venezuelan opposition figure and former executive at the nation’s state-owned oil company has voiced strong approval for the U.S. military operation that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, but sharply criticized President Trump’s outlined strategy for the aftermath as deeply unconventional.
Pedro Burelli, an ex-director at PDVSA and a vocal backer of opposition leader María Corina Machado, described the proposals detailed in Trump’s Saturday press conference—particularly the idea of the United States administering Venezuela during a transitional period—as profoundly odd.
In posts on X, Burelli stated that the word “bizarre” falls short of capturing the proposals he heard. He urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others to address what he called an “unacceptable situation.”
Burelli further cautioned that exploiting Venezuela’s vast oil reserves, as suggested, would face significant hurdles. He emphasized that oil firms require stable conditions to operate effectively and that any meaningful production growth would take years.

“Venezuela is broke and needy, but it is not about to surrender to absurd whims,” Burelli wrote, underscoring the country’s determination to retain sovereignty amid its economic challenges.
