Netanyahu Proposes Trump for Nobel Peace Prize Amid Gaza Talks

Washington: During a White House meeting on July 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he had nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing Trump’s diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. Netanyahu presented Trump with a letter sent to the Nobel Prize committee, praising his role in fostering peace across multiple regions, including the Abraham Accords. “He’s forging peace as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other,” Netanyahu told reporters.

The announcement came during a dinner focused on critical ceasefire negotiations for the Gaza conflict. Trump expressed optimism about the talks, stating, “I don’t think there is a hold up. I think things are going along very well. The discussions also touched on broader Middle East issues, including U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and efforts to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, with Netanyahu suggesting collaboration with other nations to offer Palestinians a “better future.”

However, Netanyahu remained firm on Israel’s stance against a fully sovereign Palestinian state, emphasizing that Israel would retain security control over Gaza. “Now, people will say it’s not a complete state, it’s not a state. We don’t care,” he said. The meeting, Netanyahu’s third visit since Trump’s return to office, included key figures such as U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, Netanyahu’s wife Sara, Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, National Security Council head Tzachi Hanegbi, and Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs.

The talks reflect ongoing efforts to resolve the Gaza conflict, with Israeli negotiators also engaging in indirect discussions with Hamas in Qatar. Trump’s push for a ceasefire aligns with his broader goal of stabilizing the region, building on recent truces, including one between Israel and Iran.
