An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 slammed Indonesia early on Saturday, killing at least 38 people, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency. As a search and rescue effort begins, the official death toll has been increasing. According to the BNPB agency, a number of persons had suffered varied degrees of injuries.
The earthquake and its several aftershocks have caused damage to buildings in the area. Just before 5:00 local time on Saturday (22:00 GMT on Friday), an earthquake occurred on the island of Flores. According to Indonesia’s meteorological and geophysics service, it was 15 kilometers deep. An earthquake’s effects on the surface are typically more devastating the shallower it is.
The same region had powerful aftershocks, one of which had a magnitude of 6.1.
Large pieces of concrete broke off the terminal building onto passengers waiting to board an inter-island ferry, according to footage captured at the Maumere port. When a ship’s gangway collapsed, some were flung into the ocean.
Following the authorities’ tsunami warning, a stream of people were observed riding motorcycles inland. 2,000 people had moved or evacuated on their own, according to BNPB.
It stated that there had been five deaths in East Manggarai province, six in Manggarai province, and three in Sikka province. The disaster service also stated that eleven people had minor injuries and at least two others suffered significant injuries.
Assessing the complete scope of the devastation in the isolated and hilly area will take time.
According to preliminary accounts, 54 homes, five medical facilities, three houses of worship, six government buildings, an educational institution, and a warehouse had all sustained significant damage.
According to BNPB, Manggarai province is one of the most impacted regions.
It urged people to maintain their composure and to avoid damaged buildings and coastal areas.
Because Indonesia is located where three major tectonic plates converge, it is vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
