Modi and Trump’s Enduring Bond Signals Stronger India-US Ties

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi swiftly reciprocated US President Donald Trump’s warm remarks, signaling a potential thaw in the recently strained India-US relationship, according to The Times of India. Modi’s response followed Trump’s positive comments about their personal rapport and the bilateral partnership, hinting at an opportunity to mend ties that have faced challenges in recent years after a strong two-decade run.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reinforced this sentiment, emphasizing Modi’s high regard for the India-US partnership. Speaking ahead of his upcoming trip to New York for the 80th UN General Assembly session, Jaishankar noted that Modi and Trump have consistently maintained a strong personal connection. “The Prime Minister places immense value on our ties with the United States,” Jaishankar told The Times of India, adding that India remains actively engaged with its American counterparts. However, he refrained from elaborating further on the specifics of their diplomatic interactions.

The exchange has sparked speculation about a possible phone call between the two leaders, though diplomatic sources have not confirmed any such plans. The positive rhetoric comes at a time when both nations are navigating tensions, particularly over trade and tariffs, which have strained relations in recent months. Trump’s earlier imposition of tariffs on Indian goods and his concerns about India’s purchase of Russian oil had created friction, but Modi’s response underscored the enduring strength of the strategic partnership.

Originally, India had reserved a slot for Modi to address the UN General Assembly on September 26. However, updated plans indicate that Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation, delivering the national statement at the ministerial level. This shift has reduced the likelihood of a bilateral meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the UNGA, but the recent exchange of goodwill suggests both sides are keen to rebuild trust and reinforce their “comprehensive global strategic partnership,” as described by Modi on X.
