Meta’s Super Intelligence Labs Launched: Why Zuckerberg Is Poaching OpenAI Talent

[By Our Correspondent Devansh Desai]

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled Meta Super Intelligence Labs, a new division tasked with pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, according to an internal memo cited by Bloomberg. The move comes as Meta aims to rebound from the underwhelming response to its Llama 4 models and stay competitive in the intensifying AI race. Bolstering its efforts, Meta recently poured $14.3 billion into Scale AI, signaling a major commitment to advancing its AI capabilities.

The division will be led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, with Nat Friedman, previously of GitHub, co-leading efforts in AI product development and applied research. Daniel Gross, co-founder and CEO of SSI, will also play a key role. Reuters reports that Zuckerberg has recruited 11 AI experts, including talent from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, to drive the initiative forward.

What’s the Mission of Meta’s New AI Division?

Zuckerberg’s memo, per Bloomberg, outlines a bold goal for Meta Super Intelligence Labs: to develop “superintelligence” systems capable of performing tasks as well as or better than humans. “With AI progress accelerating, superintelligence is now in sight,” he wrote. “This marks a new chapter for humanity, and Meta is all in on leading it.”

Why Is Meta Targeting OpenAI Experts?

As competition in the AI sector surges, top talent is in high demand. OpenAI’s Sam Altman revealed to Reuters that Meta has offered signing bonuses as high as $100 million to attract his researchers. Meta has also tapped talent from Google and Anthropic, though a Wired report notes that Anthropic’s culture may not align closely with Meta’s. This aggressive hiring spree highlights Zuckerberg’s resolve to position Meta at the forefront of the AI revolution.
