Meta To Remove End-to-End Encryption From Instagram DMs

Meta is pulling out an end-to-end encryption option on the Instagram DMs. The company announced this change in its update to its support page and via alerts to its users in the app saying

End-to -end encryption messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby Luce told The Verge that as very few people were making use of this feature so they thought to discontinue it. As there is End-to-end encryption feature for both sides users, Dms and calls were not visible to third parties including Meta until they are reshared by the users.

Meta and some other tech giants have come under fire for turning over communications to outside entities, including law enforcement. Tiktok for example, does not offer end to end encryption for users DMs and explained to the BBC that the decision is the result of numerous safety considerations.

For users who still want end-to-end encryption, Meta’s spokesperson says to turn to whatsapp but even the meta owned messaging service isn’t entirely safe from intrusions either. If you are looking for end-to-end encryption it will still be available on Messenger.
