Mark Carney’s Liberals on Track to Secure Fourth Term in Historic Canadian Election

Ottawa: Canadian news network CTV News has projected that Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party are set to retain power following the country’s 45th federal election. Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau after internal party dissent led to Trudeau’s resignation, is expected to win enough seats to form the next government.
The election campaign, considered one of Canada’s most unpredictable, saw key figures including Liberal leader Mark Carney, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP’s Jagmeet Singh, Bloc Quebecois’ Yves-François Blanchet, and Green Party co-leader Jonathan Pedneault vying for leadership.
CTV News reported that voters have made their decision clear, paving the way for the Liberals to form the government a rare fourth consecutive term in Canadian political history.
The election unfolded amid heightened tensions with the United States, following tariff threats and provocative remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to Canada as the “51st state.” An IPSOS poll conducted for Global News ahead of the vote showed the Liberals maintaining a four-point lead.
This snap election was triggered after Carney, shortly after assuming office, dissolved Parliament seeking a renewed mandate. He framed the election as a response to what he called “the greatest crisis of his lifetime,” citing Trump’s aggressive trade policies and sovereignty threats. Carney’s background as a respected former central banker, along with his firm opposition to U.S. pressure, bolstered his popularity and voter confidence.
During his tenure, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced diplomatic setbacks, notably strained ties with India after alleging Indian involvement in the killing of NIA-listed terrorist Hardeep Nijjar. In contrast, Carney has emphasized the importance of strengthening Indo-Canadian relations, notably extending condolences following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
