Washington : High-level talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad ended without an agreement, with US Vice President JD Vance pointing to a crucial limitation on the Iranian side, as reported by Hindustan Times. According to Vance, the Iranian representatives present during the negotiations did not have the authority required to finalise a deal, which ultimately led to the breakdown of discussions.
Speaking after the conclusion of the talks, Vance explained that although both sides engaged in detailed discussions, it became evident that the Iranian delegation could not commit to the terms proposed by the United States. He suggested that key decisions were likely reserved for higher leadership in Tehran, possibly requiring approval from senior authorities before any agreement could be reached.
The US delegation, which participated in intensive negotiations in Pakistan, left without securing a formal agreement. Vance noted that the discussions provided insight into Iran’s negotiation approach, but the inability of the attending officials to make binding decisions prevented progress at a critical stage.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, responding after the talks, stated that Iran had engaged in the discussions in good faith. However, he claimed that differences emerged near the final stages, citing shifting positions and additional demands as obstacles to reaching a consensus.
The talks marked a significant diplomatic effort to address ongoing tensions, but the absence of decision-making authority on one side proved to be a major hurdle. As highlighted by Hindustan Times, both sides now appear to be reassessing their next steps following the inconclusive outcome of the Islamabad meeting.
