New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the violation of Qatar’s sovereignty following Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas leaders in Doha. In a phone call with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani on Wednesday, Modi expressed deep concern over the attacks, which occurred in the Qatari capital on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The strikes, aimed at senior Hamas figures, sparked widespread international criticism.
In a statement shared on X, Modi declared, “Spoke with Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and expressed deep concern at the attacks in Doha. India condemns the violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly State of Qatar.” He emphasized India’s commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, urging all parties to avoid escalation. Modi also reaffirmed India’s stance against terrorism in all its forms, while advocating for peace and stability in the region.
The Israeli military confirmed the operation, codenamed “Summit of Fire,” targeted Hamas leadership, whom they accused of orchestrating the October 7, 2023, attack that ignited the ongoing Gaza conflict. The strikes hit a residential area in Doha, prompting Qatar to denounce the assault as a “cowardly” violation of its sovereignty. Hamas reported five members killed but stated the attempt to eliminate its senior leaders failed.
Modi’s remarks align with India’s broader diplomatic position, as seen in its participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where member states condemned actions causing civilian casualties in Gaza. The Prime Minister praised Qatar’s mediation efforts in the Israel-Hamas conflict, particularly its role in ceasefire negotiations. Sheikh Tamim expressed gratitude for India’s solidarity.
The conversation also underscored the strong India-Qatar relationship, with both leaders pledging to deepen their strategic partnership. India, home to over 830,000 Indian nationals in Qatar, remains a key economic partner, particularly in energy trade.
