Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has made a sweeping allegation on social media, claiming that associates linked to the late Jeffrey Epstein are conspiring to orchestrate a large-scale terrorist attack similar to the September 11, 2001 attacks — and to subsequently blame Iran for it.
Posting on X, Larijani wrote: “I’ve heard that the remaining members of Epstein’s network have devised a conspiracy to create an incident similar to 9/11 and blame Iran for it.” The senior Iranian official followed up the claim by distancing Tehran from any such designs, stating, “Iran fundamentally opposes such terrorist schemes and has no war with the American people.”
The statement has drawn swift international attention given the gravity of the comparison invoked. The September 11, 2001 attacks — among the deadliest in modern history — saw 19 hijackers affiliated with the Al-Qaeda terrorist organisation seize control of four commercial passenger aircraft. Two planes were deliberately crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City, bringing both structures down in a catastrophic collapse. A third aircraft struck the Pentagon, the US military’s headquarters in Virginia. A fourth plane came down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back against the hijackers, preventing it from reaching what was believed to be a target in Washington, DC. Close to 3,000 people were killed across all four sites, according to reports from major news agencies including Reuters.

As of the time of publication, the US government has issued no official response to Larijani’s specific claims. No public evidence has been presented to substantiate the allegation of a plot involving associates of Jeffrey Epstein.
