Tensions Rise as Iran-Backed Militias Plan Attacks on US Bases in Iraq and Syria

Washington – US military and intelligence officials have uncovered evidence suggesting that Iran-backed militias are preparing to target American bases in Iraq and potentially Syria. The planned attacks are believed to be a response to recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, escalating tensions in the region.

The reports, citing US officials, indicates that while the militias have not yet acted, Iraqi authorities are actively working to prevent any strikes. The US State Department has responded by issuing a global security alert, urging American citizens to exercise heightened caution due to the increased risk of retaliatory actions.

The report highlights the delicate situation in Iraq, where the government maintains close ties with Iran. Iraqi Shia militias, while officially under Baghdad’s authority, often take direction from Tehran, complicating efforts to maintain stability. The US has approximately 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq, with additional personnel in Syria, Jordan, and other Gulf states, all of which could be vulnerable to attacks by Iran-aligned groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah or the Houthis in Yemen.

Lieutenant General Schwartz, a US military official, emphasized that bases in Iraq, Jordan, and Syria are at higher risk compared to those in Bahrain and Kuwait. The reports also noted that Iran’s arsenal of short-range missiles, rockets, and drones poses a significant threat, particularly if these weapons are supplied to militias in Iraq or Syria. The Houthis, who recently agreed to a ceasefire with the US, could resume attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea if tensions escalate further.

The US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, including Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz, have intensified the conflict. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks, accusing the US of collaborating with Israel in the initial strikes. In response, Iran has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address the situation.
As the region braces for potential retaliation, the US military has placed its forces on high alert, with officials warning that any attacks on American assets would be met with a strong response. President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to de-escalate but is prepared to take further action against hostile entities if necessary.
