Global Unity Through Yoga: Celebrating International Yoga Day 2025 on June 21

The 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) is being observed worldwide on June 21, 2025, with widespread enthusiasm. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” emphasizes the connection between personal wellness and environmental health, aligning with the Indian philosophy of “Sarve Santu Niramaya” (May all be free from disease). The theme reflects India’s vision of fostering harmony between individuals and the planet, rooted in the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family).
India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, led celebrations organized by the High Commission of India at The Strand in London, where the Indian diaspora and yoga enthusiasts gathered to honor the theme. The choice of June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere symbolizes harmony between humanity and nature.
The 2025 celebrations mark a significant milestone with a grand event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a Common Yoga Protocol session. The event, part of a series of 10 signature programs, includes “Yoga Sangam,” a mass yoga demonstration held at 100,000 locations across India. These initiatives highlight yoga’s role in promoting holistic health and global unity.

The origins of International Yoga Day trace back to 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed its establishment during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. The UN adopted the resolution on December 11, 2014, with 177 member states co-sponsoring it, and the first IDY was celebrated in 2015.
A survey by the Ministry of Ayush, reveals that nearly one in four Indians now incorporates yoga encompassing asanas, breath control, and meditation into their lifestyle. Of the 30,084 respondents, 11% practice yoga daily, while 13% do so occasionally. However, 75% of respondents still do not practice yoga, indicating room for growth in its adoption.
International Yoga Day 2025 underscores yoga’s universal appeal as a practice that unites body, mind, and spirit, fostering both individual and planetary well-being.
