Oslo : The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Indian-origin South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay in recognition of her work to strengthen international law and promote peace. The peace prize is the fifth Nobel awarded this week, after literature, chemistry, physics and medicine. Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won in 2025.
Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, Pillay built a career defending human rights and challenging injustice. She represented anti-apartheid activists and established her own law firm in 1967, the Nobel Committee said in an official statement. In 1999, Pillay was appointed a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
She played a significant role in establishing that sexual violence, rape and the use of propaganda could form the basis for prosecutions involving crimes against humanity and genocide. Pillay subsequently served as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC). From 2008 to 2014, she was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025.
The UN Human Rights Office acknowledged Plillay’s longstanding advocacy for human rights. “It is amazing news, we need more dedication and commitment to human rights,” Shabia Mantoo, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, told reporters in Geneva. The Nobel Peace Prize, worth 12 million Swedish crowns, or about $1.2 million, is due to be presented in Oslo on December 10.
