Joe Root Reveals What He Told Gus Atkinson After Sacrificing His Century In England’s Win Over India

Cardiff: England defeated India by four wickets with 35 balls to spare in the second ODI of the three-match series at Sophia Gardens on Thursday night. After the victory, Player of the Match Joe Root, who remained unbeaten on 99 off 133 balls with nine fours, revealed an interesting conversation he had with batting partner Gus Atkinson during the chase.
India posted 233 after Virat Kohli scored 65, Shreyas Iyer made 66, captain Shubman Gill contributed 31 and Jasprit Bumrah remained unbeaten on 20. England successfully chased down the target, reaching 235 for 6 in 44.1 overs to level the three-match series 1-1.
Root Turned Down the Chance to Complete His Century
Former England captain Joe Root remained stranded on 99, missing out on what would have been his 21st ODI century. With England needing only a handful of runs and still having 35 balls left, Root could have comfortably completed the milestone. Instead, he encouraged Gus Atkinson to continue playing his natural game and finish the chase as quickly as possible.

What Did Joe Root Tell Gus Atkinson?
Root remained unbeaten on 99, while Atkinson finished unbeaten on 23. After Will Jacks was dismissed with England on 197, Root and Atkinson stitched together an unbroken 38-run partnership to guide their team home.
Although Root needed just one run to reach his century, he chose to put the team’s victory ahead of his personal milestone. Speaking after the match, he said:
“I honestly never play for personal milestones. I walk onto the field with only one objective—to help my team win. Winning the match is always my top priority. Completing a century is never more important than the team’s success. I told Atkinson not to worry about my hundred and to keep playing his shots naturally. All that mattered was finishing the chase. Beating the world’s No. 1 team, India, gives me far greater satisfaction. There is no better feeling than staying at the crease until the winning runs are scored.”
Joe Root Earns Widespread Praise on Social Media
Root’s selfless approach in putting the team’s victory ahead of his personal milestone has drawn widespread appreciation from fans and former cricketers across social media.
When Is the Series Decider?
With the three-match series now level at 1-1, the third and final ODI will be played at Lord’s on Sunday, starting at 3:30 PM IST. The match is also expected to be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance.
