India Gets 6 Months Exemption From US Sanction On Chabahar Port

New Delhi : India has been granted a 6-month exemption from US sanctions on operations at the Chabahar Port project in Iran, that came into effect on September 29, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday. India has been granted a waiver for Chabahar port in Iran from US sanctions for the next six months, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a media interaction in New Delhi on Thursday, apart from briefing on other issues of global implications.

The Trump administration had said that it would revoke the sanctions waiver granted in 2018 for operations at the key port in Central Asia, a move that was expected to impact India’s role in developing the key terminal. The decision came as part of Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran. Chabahar is of strategic importance for India as it provides a trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. In a statement in mid-September, the US Department of State said the revocation of waiver decision was consistent with President Trump’s maximum pressure policy to isolate the Iranian regime.

Responding to questions about recently imposed US sanctions on Russian oil companies, Jaiswal noted that India is “studying the implications” of these measures. He emphasized that New Delhi’s decisions on energy procurement are guided by national interests and the evolving dynamics of the global oil market.

Our position on the larger question of energy sourcing is well known, Jaiswal added, underscoring that India’s policy is aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy supplies from diverse sources to meet the needs of its 1.4 billion citizens. The developments underline India’s continued efforts to balance its strategic partnerships with both Washington and Moscow while safeguarding its economic priorities.
