Google marked Pi Day 2026 with a special homepage doodle celebrating the mathematical constant pi and the work of the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes. The doodle released on March 14 highlights the historical approach used by Archimedes to approximate the value of the famous number.
Pi Day is observed annually on March 14, a date that corresponds to the first digits of the constant-3.14. The day is widely celebrated by mathematicians, students and science enthusiasts around the world who mark the occasion with activities ranging from mathematical contests to themed events.
The mathematical constant pi (π) represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and is widely used in formulas across mathematics, engineering and physics. It is classified as an irrational number, meaning its decimal expansion never ends and does not follow a repeating pattern. In most calculations, the value is approximated as 3.14, while another commonly used fractional approximation is 22/7.
Google explained that the 2026 doodle draws attention to the foundational geometric ideas that helped determine the limits of pi centuries before modern computing methods existed. Archimedes is known for estimating the value of pi by placing a circle between two polygons with many sides. By calculating the perimeter of polygons with up to 96 sides, he was able to determine upper and lower bounds for the value of the constant.
The Pi Day doodle has been displayed in several countries including India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Brazil and Mexico, among others.
Google doodles are creative modifications of the company’s logo that appear on its homepage to mark notable occasions, historic milestones or influential figures. According to NDTV, the tradition dates back to 1998 when Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin first used a doodle to inform users they were attending the Burning Man festival.
