Trump Secures Legislative Triumph with Passage of ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’

Washington: On Thursday, US President Donald Trump achieved a significant legislative milestone as Congress narrowly approved his signature tax and spending legislation, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The bill’s passage, with a tight 218-214 vote in the House of Representatives, marks a pivotal win for Trump’s second-term agenda, reinforcing his focus on immigration enforcement and fiscal policy.

The bill, which allocates $4.5 trillion to extend tax cuts from Trump’s first term, also boosts military spending and funds a large-scale deportation initiative. This legislative package fulfills key promises from Trump’s 2024 campaign, including enhanced border security measures. The vote faced significant resistance, with Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delaying proceedings with an unprecedented nearly nine-hour speech, highlighting concerns about the bill’s impact on everyday Americans.

Despite internal Republican dissent, House Speaker Mike Johnson worked tirelessly overnight to unify party members, securing the necessary votes for passage. Only two House Republicans opposed the bill, while the Senate had earlier approved it by a slim 51-50 margin, with Vice-President JD Vance casting the deciding vote. The legislation, now headed to Trump’s desk, is set to be signed into law during a ceremonial event on July 4th, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations.

Trump hailed the achievement on his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring, “One of the most consequential Bills ever. The USA is the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, by far!!!” The bill’s passage follows other recent successes for Trump, including a Supreme Court ruling limiting judicial blocks on his policies and US airstrikes that facilitated a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will add approximately $3.4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade and could result in nearly 12 million Americans losing Medicaid coverage. Democrats, led by Jeffries, argued that the legislation prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy while undermining social welfare programs, risking healthcare access for millions.

This legislative victory underscores Trump’s ability to navigate a divided Congress, delivering a cornerstone of his domestic policy agenda just six months into his second term.
