Car Rams Into Crowd At Liverpool FC Victory Parade, Injuring Nearly 50 | Watch Video

Celebrations in Liverpool turned tragic on Monday evening after a car drove into a crowd of fans gathered to mark Liverpool FC’s Premier League triumph. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Water Street, a key point along the club’s 10-mile parade route. At least 27 people were taken to nearby hospitals following the collision. Police confirmed a total of 47 people sustained injuries in the incident.

The suspect, identified as a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, has been arrested in connection with the crash. Merseyside Police confirmed that they received emergency calls shortly after 6 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had struck several people in the city centre.

Thousands of fans had lined the streets, braving heavy rain to celebrate Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th league title alongside the team. Players including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk greeted supporters from open-top buses as flares lit up the gloomy skies. It was the club’s first public league title celebration since 1990.

As the parade made its way through the city, the festivities were abruptly interrupted when a people carrier veered into the packed crowd near the Liver Building. Emergency services quickly descended on the scene, with police, ambulances, fire crews, and even an air ambulance deployed in response.

“We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre,” said a spokesperson from Merseyside Police, urging the public to refrain from drawing conclusions while investigations are underway.

Eyewitnesses have shared harrowing accounts of the moment the vehicle tore into the crowd. Harry Rashid, 48, from Solihull, who was attending the parade with his wife and two daughters, described the terrifying scene.

“It happened about 10 feet away from us. We were just in a crowd and we had no control over where we would be, because it was a very narrow street,” he said. “The vehicle came to our right. It emerged from just right next to an ambulance, which was parked up. This people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us. It was travelling south, down Water Street, straight towards the Strand.”

Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing concern for those injured during the incident. “We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident,” a club spokesperson said.

Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, also shared his sentiments. “Our hearts go out to all of those affected, especially those who have been injured. Thank you, as ever, to the first responders for their professionalism and swift action. This is a difficult day for our city region, but we stand together.”

As investigations continue, the city remains in shock after what was meant to be a day of historic celebration turned into a scene of panic and pain.
