Terror attack: Arrests for ‘pro-Pakistan’ posts rise to 9 in Assam

Authorities in Assam have detained a ninth individual for allegedly expressing pro-Pakistan sentiments online following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday.

The latest arrest occurred in Sribhumi district on Friday night, with the suspect accused of posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook, according to Sarma’s statement on X.

On Thursday, two people, including AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, were taken into custody, followed by six additional arrests across Assam on Friday, the chief minister noted. The arrests span multiple districts, including Silchar in Cachar, Hailakandi, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Barpeta, and Biswanath.

Sarma emphasized Assam’s firm stance, stating on social media Friday, “Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam.”

The crackdown follows a terrorist attack on Tuesday in Baisaran, a popular tourist spot in Pahalgam, south Kashmir, which claimed at least 26 lives, primarily tourists, and left several others injured.
